Why we're launching Obsidian Eyewear

Let's be honest – most blue light glasses make you look like you've just wandered off the set of a low-budget sci-fi film. We know because we spent years trying to find ones that didn't.

That search led us (a British husband and Australian wife team) from Sydney café sketches to our Essex workshop, and eventually to creating Obsidian Eyewear – because sometimes if you want something done properly, you've got to do it yourself.

 

The blue light glasses conundrum

The market is full of extremes:

Option 1: Glasses with orange tints so obvious they practically scream, "I'M WEARING BLUE LIGHT GLASSES!" Pair these with your white lab coat for maximum effect.

Option 2: Fashion-first frames that claim to filter blue light but do about as much protection as a chocolate teapot. They look good at that client meeting, but your eyes still feel like they've done ten rounds with your laptop by home time.

Both left us properly miffed. We wanted glasses we'd be excited to wear that also delivered genuine protection.

 

Our solution: protection without the faff

We've created blue light glasses that:

Actually work: Filter over 50% of harmful blue-violet light (400-450 nm) while allowing beneficial blue-turquoise light (450-495 nm) to pass through

Look brilliant: Handcrafted from premium Italian Mazzucchelli acetate with timeless designs that complement your style (not scream "tech nerd")

Feel comfortable: So lightweight you'll forget they're on your face during marathon Zoom sessions

Maintain natural colour: No weird orange tint making the world look like a perpetual sunset

 

The clever science bit

Not all blue light is created equal. The harmful stuff (400-450 nm) is what causes digital eye strain, while the beneficial blue-turquoise range (450-495 nm) actually helps keep your body clock ticking properly.

We specifically targeted just the harmful range for a simple reason: what's the point of 100% blue light blocking if you never wear the bloody things? By focusing only on filtering the harmful spectrum, you get protection without walking around seeing the world through orange-tinted glasses.

 

Born between two continents

Like the volcanic glass we're named after, Obsidian Eyewear was formed under pressure – specifically, the pressure of finding eyewear that wasn't complete rubbish at either protection or style.

Our cross-cultural approach blends British precision with Australia's no-nonsense practicality. Think sophisticated enough for the boardroom, durable enough for your mate's barbie.
